at her best, the teacher is a person who can say that she has assisted others in learning, that she has helped to provide an atmosphere in which learning can take place, by selecting and arranging some of the materials for learning, and by selecting and arranging some of the experiences for learning. She can keep in mind this thing called the design, this idea of what can eventuate from learning in certain fields or through certain experiences; she can help the learner to see the purposes beneath his learning. She inevitably stresses certain types of ideas by her own selection of materials and experiences for learning. Throughout, she considers the learning process in relation to the growth of the learner, the individuality of the learner, the civilization in which the learner must live, and, often, without realizing it, in relation to the values which the teacher thinks important in life. Teaching, therefore, is like the whole of living. Hence the whole personality of the teacher, the way in which the teacher meets experience, is necessarily involved.
